Additional Information

Sign up:  Call or email to let me know you are interested and I will set up an interview with you.  This gives us a chance to meet, answer questions, and determine your child’s readiness.

Parent involvement: A parent will be expected to attend and observe the group lessons and private lessons.  That same parent will need to supervise all practice sessions at home.  This is at the heart of my method of teaching the violin to young children and is crucial to their success.

Materials:  I will purchase these and have them available at the first class.  If you already have any of these, you can bring them and you don’t have to purchase from me.

Why both private and group lessons?
Playing the violin involves a complex set of skills.  Each child needs concentrated, individual attention from the teacher to guide him/her through the process of learning those skills.  Each step builds on the previous step.  As the child experiences success with each tiny step his confidence grows.

In the group lessons children share their musical experience.  They motivate and inspire each other by playing their songs together and playing solos for each other.  Skills that are taught in the private lesson are reinforced and students find encouragement through learning together with other children.  I teach theory, solfeggio (singing music with syllables, do, re, mi, etc.), ear training (recognizing intervals and singing them), rhythm, and music history.  These things are easily learned in a class setting, enabling the students to develop a well rounded understanding of music.  Simply put, group lessons are fun!

What happens after the Violin Beginners session is over?
I will be available to continue private lessons for three more weeks in the summer.  Fall lessons will begin on September 13.  Individual lessons will be scheduled during the week and group lessons will be on Saturdays.  The purpose of Violin Beginners is to give children a strong start on a continuing journey of developing their potential on the violin.
